Well, I’m off for PA for the weekend, but before that, one more post…Two more links on the roll.  One my friend Matt’s blog–excellent political commentary and analysis of current affairs, and the other Medievalists.net, a superb clearing house and resource for medieval news and happenings.

And two articles, crusades-related.  The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem (didn’t know that existed, did you?) had several significant events in the last week or two, in Rome and Turin.  Very interesting stuff, and an underrated aspect of both modern Catholicism and the historical reach of the crusades.  The Order’s website is here.

I’m not familiar with Rodney Stark’s work, but this review of his book God’s Battalions: The Case for the Crusades, makes me want to check out the book for myself.  Russello’s review seems to give a good overview of what the book is about–as best as I can tell, take the introduction and conclusion of Thomas Madden’s New Concise History of the Crusades, and expand it to book-length.  Similar lines of argument, and definitely thought-provoking.  On the other hand, I still see difficulties in linking the historical memory of several centuries of Muslim conquests with a “sudden” French/Papal desire to act militarily–there was a paper at this past Kalamazoo that addressed a similar problem (granted, it wasn’t that sudden, but you get my point…I hope.).  Should make compelling reading…

Ok, I’ll take care of any outstanding business/correspondence on Monday.  Have a great holiday weekend!
